CMS Rolls Out Surrogate User Program

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released information about its surrogate user program, which is now available for use. The program authorizes individuals or organizations to work on behalf of physicians or group practices to enter and update information in Medicare systems, including the Medicare enrollment system (PECOS), National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) and Meaningful Use registration and attestation.

CMS has made available a demonstration video, quick reference guide and frequently asked questions about the new surrogate user program. It will also host a call on Nov. 15 to discuss this and other policy changes it believes will streamline access to PECOS.

CMS Sets Deadlines To Convert LCDs

Medicare contractors must publish their ICD-10 local coverage determinations (LCDs) and associated ICD-10 articles on the Medicare coverage database  no later than April 10, 2014. The transmittal R1293OTN and MM8348 was  issued on September 6, 2013 by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

All LCDs and articles will receive a new identification number.   If the Medicare administrative contractor (MAC) only translates the ICD-9 codes to the appropriate ICD-10 code, there is no need to vet the change or send the LCD through the public comment and notice process.
